Stories from the farm October 24
Post by Holly:
October has probably got to be my favourite month. It is such a beautiful time of year that although it is getting darker, when there is daylight, there is such an array of colour. The morning sun (if it decides to grace us with its presence) casts a golden light that just illuminates the golds, reds and greens. The reds of the rowan berries and the bright oranges of the sycamore just seem to light up in the sun but amongst the colours of autumn there are still some trees clinging onto the summer greens. Of course, as its October, we are not always guaranteed to see the sun, but the grey drizzly days make me all the more appreciative of the cosiness of the indoors.
The animals at Wark definitely make it easy most days to venture out in all sorts of weather. All the lambs and calves that were born earlier this year have grown so much. On my drive to work in the morning as I come into the valley and see the belted Galloways dotted across the field, lately it has been getting harder to distinguish the calves from the fully grown cows.
The same goes for the lambs as some look the same size as the ewes! The lambs have now been weaned and we will be getting the ewes ready to go in with the tups again to start the whole lambing process again May next year. There is one lamb from this year’s lambing I will not quickly forget however.
Boadicea or ‘Bodi’ for short Bodi sadly lost her mum earlier in the year, so she had to be bottle fed for the first few months of her life. While she was being bottle fed, it was like having a little shadow that would follow me around. I will never forget working in the pie room one day and hearing her little bleat calling for me right outside the door. Even now that she has been weaned off milk, she will still come to me. When we bring all the ewes and lambs into to the sheep pens, I am suddenly aware of a small presence standing at my feet. My little Bodi, not so little anymore, still comes for a cuddle and will follow me around until I tell her its time to be a sheep again and go back with the flock. I look forward to the day in May 2026 when I will walk out into the fields and perhaps see Bodi with her own lambs.
